Chivirico has gone to school!

Judging by the number of emails I get, many people are following the story of Chivirico. Last night, as we were having dinner, he came by to tell me that his Dad had bought his school uniform. He stopped for a while, and ate his first fajita, which he loved. He said that today he would have his hair cut, as Dominican schools are very strict on length of hair for boys and that he would be starting school on Tuesday. Imagine my surprise when he turned up  at 7.30 this morning, all ready to go to school.

He looked very smart in his uniform together with his back pack and newly cut hair and was very excited to be going. I am a little concerned that they might send him home, as he is wearing his trainers rather than black shoes, and some schools would send him home for that, but maybe the school here is less strict. The shoes are the most expensive part of the uniform.

I am really pleased that his dad managed to get the cash to pay for his uniform and will be keeping a watchful eye on his progress.

  1. It´s terrible that kids wouldn´t be accepted in school because they don´t have the right shoes, specially when those kids live in a "poor country". Here in Australia, private schools seem to be strict with uniforms, but in public schools, although kids have to wear the uniform, I see that they use all sorts of different shoes - tennis shoes, sandals, colourful shoes...and even various types of trousers, shorts, skirts, track suit pants...as long as they are blue or black to go with the uniform colour. Good luck to Chivirico, and may he always feel excited about going to school and learning!

    1. Yes the schools are very strict here and the cost of the uniform stops a lot of them going. Chivirico returned at lunchtime clutching his maths workbook, which luckily was given free as they often have to buy the books. He has two pieces of homework to do, but he said he would do them later as it is too hot at the minute!

    1. Trouble is kids are like puppies and kittens. So cute at this age, and the fact that he always has an answer is lovely. Won't be as nice when he is a teenager and answering back lol! No he wasn't turned away which was great.

  4. Oh happy day!!! I am soooo excited for him! If the news had been any different, I would have sent the money personally. Give him my blessings and convey to him that people care about his progress. He is such a little angle and I am so happy now.... THANKS!

    1. Thought it would make you happy, which is why I posted as soon as I knew. He has quite a fan club, and can't get his head around the fact that people around the world are interested in him!

  5. Frequently there are churches are charities in the US that help families get the appropriate clothes to wear to school. Does that exist in the DR?

  6. Not as far as I am aware. It is one of the big issues for families here - the school uniforms and many children do not go to school as they can't afford the uniform. There doesn't seem to be a second hand market either and the clothes don't appear to last well.
